The philosophy of a good snack

A good snack should be something that I can make in a short amount of time. While you can enjoy cooking dinner, and even though cooking is a delightful activity, a snack should be completed in a tight schedule. The point of a snack is to enjoy the food itself, rather than the process.

As such, it should need a minimal amount of preparation, a minimal amount of ingredients and a minimal amount of time.

However, it doesn’t end at that. I want my evening snacks to also be filling and be nutritious.

What’s the solution then?

Eggs are amazing. The whites have a unique texture. The yolks are amazing at binding together a filling for a sandwich. Mix them with a bit of greek yogurt and you get an even better filling glue.

We’ve got the glue now. What do we stick with it? 2 slices of break obviously. But there must be more. Eggs and yogurt does not a sandwich filling make.

Onions are also amazing. Add a bunch of chopped cilantro. Some diced tomatoes. Add some chaat masala, coriander and cumin powder to taste. You have something amazing on your hands now.

The Promised Sandwich

Ingredients

The ingredients listed are left intentionally vague. Go experiment.

  • A few slices of bread
  • An egg, hard boiled
  • Couple of spoonfuls of greek yogurt
  • Half a chopped onion
  • Green Chillies
  • A diced tomato
  • Pinchful of cilantro
  • Some slices of cheese
  • Spices. Chaat masala, coriander powder, cumin powder, black pepper. To taste.

Procedure

It’s a sandwich. Not much to expect here.

Mix all the ingredients except the bread and the cheese to make the filling. Make sure to shread the boiled egg so that there are no large chunks. The filling should have a dough-y consistency at this point.

Lay down a slice of bread. Put the desired amount of filling on it. Put a cheese slice on top, and finish the sandwich by putting on it another slice of bread.

Butter both sides liberally and toast the sandwich on a pan. Take it off the pan when golden brown.

Enjoy.
